Amazon Leo: More Than 300 Satellites in Orbit – What Is Amazon Building?

Amazon has now launched more than 300 satellites for its satellite internet network, now called Amazon Leo and previously known as Project Kuiper. The goal is to build a large low Earth orbit (LEO) broadband network that can provide fast internet access in places where fiber, cable or mobile networks are weak, expensive or unavailable. The full constellation is planned to include 3,236 satellites. In simple words: Amazon is building its own Starlink-style internet network, but with deep links to AWS cloud services, enterprise customers, telecom providers and future consumer internet access. This is not only about home internet — it is also about connecting remote businesses, ships, aircraft, emergency services, rural areas and cloud infrastructure worldwide.

What is Amazon Leo?

Amazon Leo is Amazon’s satellite broadband project. It was originally announced under the name Project Kuiper, but Amazon now presents it as Amazon Leo.

The idea is to use many small satellites in low Earth orbit instead of a few large satellites much farther away from Earth.
