WhatsApp has been free for regular users for many years. However, Meta is increasingly looking for ways to monetize WhatsApp. The important point is: according to the current information, normal private chats are not becoming generally paid. Instead, Meta is focusing on optional paid features, advertising in selected areas, and business services.
What is WhatsApp Plus?
According to media reports, Meta is currently testing an optional subscription model called WhatsApp Plus. This subscription is expected to offer additional comfort and design features, such as alternative app themes, new icons, special stickers, ringtones, and the ability to pin more chats.
The reported test price is around €2.49 per month, and the test appears to be visible first in WhatsApp Messenger on Android.
Important: this subscription does not replace the free version of WhatsApp. Users who do not pay should still be able to use WhatsApp normally. The paid features currently look mostly like optional extras for people who want more customization and convenience.
