ChatGPT – Privacy and Security Perspective

In recent months, discussions have increased around one central topic:

OpenAI is building an advertising and marketing infrastructure around ChatGPT.

This does not mean that OpenAI is selling chat conversations. According to official statements, chats remain private and are not shared with advertisers.

However, the surrounding ecosystem is changing.

What Is Actually Happening?

OpenAI has started testing advertising features and expanding access to ChatGPT through different pricing models.

At the same time, reports indicate:
  • marketing cookies can be enabled for free users
  • limited identifiers (such as cookies or device signals) may be used
  • advertising infrastructure is being prepared
  • ads are being tested in certain versions of ChatGPT
The goal appears to be clear:

Make ChatGPT sustainable through a mix of subscriptions and advertising.

Important Clarification

OpenAI states:
  • chat conversations are not shared with advertisers
  • personal data is not sold
  • ads are separate and clearly labelled
So the common claim:

“OpenAI sells your chats to advertisers”

is not supported by official statements.
