FAQ

Answers to common questions.

Who is behind TUX.RE?

We combine our experience in network infrastructure and DNS services into one application.

What is a subdomain?

A subdomain is a name below a domain, such as myname.tux.re. DNS records connect that name to your server or service.

Which DNS records are supported?

Choose A, AAAA, CNAME, TXT, MX, SRV or CAA. You can add multiple values and child names inside your own subdomain.

What does TTL mean?

TTL is the time a DNS answer may be cached, in seconds. Choose 60–86400 seconds. It is not an expiry date; cached answers may remain until the previous TTL expires.

Can I use CNAME with other records?

A CNAME must be the only record type at the same name. Use a separate child name or A and AAAA records when you also need TXT or MX.

What is DynDNS?

DynDNS updates an IP address when it changes. Create a token for a subdomain with a primary A or AAAA record and let a compatible client send updates over HTTPS.

Can DynDNS update IPv4 and IPv6 together?

This version updates one primary record per hostname: A for IPv4 or AAAA for IPv6. Use separate subdomains and tokens for independent updates of both families.

Does DNS include hosting or open ports?

DNS only maps names to destinations. Your server still needs its own hosting, firewall rules, port forwarding where necessary and a TLS certificate for HTTPS.

Why do I still see an old IP address?

Resolvers and devices may cache the previous answer until its TTL expires. Check the authoritative nameserver first, then your local resolver. DNS changes do not clear existing caches.

How do I protect my DynDNS token?

Treat the token like a password. Keep it out of shared URLs and screenshots, use HTTPS, and revoke or rotate it in your account if it is exposed.
